We’re seeking a future team member for the role of Counsel - Intellectual Property / Marketing to join our Data, Intellectual Property, Technology & Innovation organization. This role is located in Pittsburgh, PA or New York, New York – Hybrid.
We are looking for an energetic attorney with broad intellectual property experience. This is a multi-faceted role where you will join a team of attorneys and paralegals to provide strategic IP guidance for (trademark, brand enforcement, copyright, and patent matters) across all portfolios of businesses within BNY and advise the Global Marketing & Communications organization.
The attorney who fills this role will be expected to collaborate with cross-functional teams and business leaders and support the implementation of new and emerging technologies, with a focus on artificial intelligence.
In this role, you’ll make an impact in the following ways:
- Work closely with stakeholders across BNY including Engineering and AI teams, to provide counseling and guidance on IP matters related to its businesses, products, services, and strategies.
- Advise and guide the Global Marketing and Communications team on a wide range of issues pertaining to marketing and communications strategies and content across various platforms for all business lines.
- Collaborate with business legal counsel to prepare, review, and negotiate various technology-focused agreements and provide counseling regarding technology transactional matters.
- Act as a strategic partner to BNY’s AI Hub on issues related to AI development and deployment including, for example, data usage, AI governance, and emerging AI laws and regulations.
- Provide legal advice on intellectual property aspects of licensing activities, merger and acquisition activities, and other strategic alliances.
- Work collaboratively with inventors and innovators to support the strategic growth of BNY’s Patent Program.
- Advise on free and open source license obligations and provide counsel on issues regarding open source compliance.
- Clearly articulate and communicate straightforward advice on IP issues to senior business leaders.
- Work flexibly in a hybrid in-office (3 days per week) environment.
To be successful in this role, we’re seeking the following:
- A J.D. from a top-tier law school.
- Bar admission in the relevant jurisdiction in which the role is based.
- 3-7 years minimum of professional experience as an admitted attorney, both in-house and law firm experience preferred.
- Prior intellectual property legal experience within the financial services industry or comparable law firm experience preferred.
- Knowledge of software and technology relevant to BNY’s business and willingness to learn new innovations.
- Experience providing support on copyright law matters and copyright risk management.
- Experience counseling on free and open source software preferred.
- Basic knowledge of patents and the patent process.
- Strong drafting and negotiating skills applicable to various technology and intellectual property agreements.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.

BNY assesses market data to ensure a competitive compensation package for our employees. The base salary for this position is expected to be between $113,000 and $220,000 per year at the commencement of employment. However, base salary if hired will be determined on an individualized basis, including as to experience and market location, and is only part of the BNY total compensation package, which, depending on the position, may also include commission earnings, discretionary bonuses, short and long-term incentive packages, and Company-sponsored benefit programs.
This position is at-will and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, change in geographic location, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
