The Opportunity
Manulife Investment Management – Timber and Agriculture (MIMTA) is the Timberland and Agriculture asset management division of Manulife Investment Management (MIM). We create value through the sustainable management of natural resources. The Global Resource Planning (GRP) team is responsible for timberland valuation that spans acquisition, divestiture, and a wide range of analytical decision support for investment performance and reporting.
The Resource Analyst will be responsible for providing resource analysis and valuation support for both potential acquisitions and existing assets under management, which could include both timber and carbon investment strategies. The Analyst will participate with other GRP team members to provide investment analysis, harvest scheduling, tactical and long-term resource modeling. Analyst will provide overview and assessment of third-party investment models and external appraisals, as well as direct analytical support for ad-hoc requests from other groups within MIMTA.
Scope:
The scope and impact of this position will cover all commercial forest investment regions worldwide with a predominant focus on North America. The ideal candidate has:
- Proficiency in forest management, forest finance, discounted cash flow analysis, forest inventory, growth and yield, woodflow optimization, GIS systems, and desktop office applications.
- Experience with any of the following: alternative asset classes, real assets, forestry, agriculture, impact investing, sustainable investing, ESG investing, carbon markets, or conservation finance
- Ability to develop and maintain strong relationships with internal groups, third party service providers, advisors, and clients.
- Ability to service the continuous information and communication needs of a diverse group of teams located in multiple regions.
- Knowledge in areas of silviculture, forest mensuration, harvest scheduling, timberland appraisal, growth and yield models, and timber supply and demand modeling.
- Familiarity with general forestry operations.
- A general understanding of the investment relevance of nature-based climate solutions, carbon sequestration, and carbon and timber market dynamics.
Specific Duties:
- Support and eventually lead underwriting on timberland acquisitions capturing investment strategies that may include improved forest management carbon projects
- Assist with all phases of property acquisition as directed by Director, Resource Planning including investment modeling, due diligence, property parcelization, and closing.
- Assist with the review of annual Long-Term Plans (LTPs) and Comprehensive Property Management Plans (CPMPs) and third-party appraisals.
- Prepare investment and education materials for internal and external stakeholders
- Support the MIMT accounting and portfolio management teams in providing information and analysis, including but not limited to investment modeling, investment analysis, and value-added decision support
- Support MIMT Global Forest Operations special projects as needed or requested.
Required Qualifications:
- A bachelor’s degree in forestry or equivalent experience!
- A graduate degree in a forest related field or business is highly desirable.
- A minimum of two years’ experience in timber valuation, resource modelling, forest management planning, timberland investment planning, or forest operations.
- An understanding of forest finance, discounted cash flow analysis, forest inventory, woodflow optimization, GIS systems, and desktop office applications.
- Working knowledge of growth & yield models, harvest scheduling, silviculture, and forest operations
- General knowledge of forestry across all commercial forest investment regions of the world.
- Must have strong organizational and analytical skills.
- Must have proficient writing skills to prepare professional report and management plans.
- Must have strong verbal communication skills.

Salary range is expected to be between
$76,000.00 USD - $127,000.00 USD
