The Opportunity
The Portfolio Monitoring Senior Associate is a key contributor towards operational effectiveness and efficiency leveraging technology-based solutions to streamline efficiencies, enable insightful program-level reporting, and support the reduction of investment and operational risk. This role sits within Barings Portfolio Finance’s Portfolio Analytics team, a team responsible for Data & Analytics, Operational Infrastructure, Management Reporting, Track Record, and Credit Modeling. The Portfolio Monitoring Senior Associate operates at the intersection of finance and technology and serves as a key liaison with various internal partners.
The Team
The team is small, close-knit, and highly collaborative. Team members are motivated by a shared goal to originate attractive investment opportunities for third-party clients while addressing the unique financing needs of our customers. The team is primarily focused on originating investment-grade, senior secured loans to asset managers and the investment vehicles that they manage across a range of asset classes, including private equity, private credit, and real estate debt. The loans, directly originated by the Portfolio Finance team, are highly negotiated, and often involve complex structuring across various global jurisdictions. The team has originated over $38 billion in private investments since 2017 and recently transitioned to Barings from MassMutual.
Key Responsibilities
- Participate in pre-close analysis to effectively identify and problem solve for unique investment structure impacts on modeling and compliance set-up.
- Willingness to learn and absorb complex lending structures and legal documents and translate economic and risk factors to financial models and tools used to manage the overall portfolio.
- Ability to build complex, reusable, and efficient deal-level credit models which include borrowing base computations, asset eligibility and concentration testing, and cash flow waterfall mechanics across a variety of asset classes.
- Critically evaluate information provided from multiple sources – both internal and external – and reconcile discrepancies to ensure sound data quality.
- Produce (and automate where possible) regularly scheduled and ad-hoc management reports to enable decision making.
- Participate in technology/automation initiatives to drive streamlined integration with borrowers, internal partners, and third-party vendors.
- Support internal controls activities.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree with at least 3 - 5 years of relevant experience in: fund finance, structured finance, investment banking, private equity, private credit, hedge funds, or management consulting.
- Prior experience in investments within private credit preferred.
- Ability to quickly learn key financial concepts and experience with developing financial models.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, attention to detail, well-organized, self-starter, and able to multitask and deliver work products on short timeframes.
- Ability and openness to understanding operational, accounting, and legal aspects of investments.
- Demonstrated interest in and experience with operational enablement through technology.
- Excellent command and proficiency of MS excel.
- Excellent documentation and communication skills.
- Control focused and attentive to detail.
The Ideal Qualifications
- Prior experience in investments within private credit preferred.
- Experience working with at least one alternative asset class and a good understanding of the risks and operations of others across the alternative investment landscape.
- Strong knowledge of and experience with analytic tools and programming languages (Python/R, and SQL with VBA a plus).
- Experience with data visualization tools & best practices (hands on experience with PowerBi or Tableau preferred).
- Solid understanding of relational database management systems.
