Position Summary
Franklin Templeton is seeking a highly motivated
Retirement Plan Consultant, often referred to as an Internal Wholesaler, to join our Workplace Retirement Sales team in Boston. The Workplace Retirement Sales team is focused on the Defined Contribution Investment-Only (DCIO) business and is responsible for directing and expanding sales of mutual funds, CIT's, and sub-advised portfolio products in employer-sponsored retirement plans offered through the workplace.
The Retirement Sales team works closely with other channels within US Distribution (Wirehouse, RBI, PWD), as well as Franklin Templeton’s independent Specialist Investment Managers, as subject matter experts on ERISA retirement plan design, plan investment menu design and analysis, Franklin Templeton’s proprietary advice engine, “GOE” , FinTech, current industry trends, and Franklin Templeton products and services. The team offers thought leadership in retirement plan services and investments and serves as a key business partner to retirement plan advisory firms, consultants, and retirement plan sponsors, with the goal of helping more Americans reach a positive retirement outcome.
What is the Retirement Plan Consultant responsible for?
The Retirement Plan Consultant (RPC), also known as an Internal Wholesaler, acts as a subject matter expert and works in partnership with a Senior Retirement Plan Director (an External Wholesaler) to achieve an annual sales goal. The RPC, in partnership with their assigned Director/External, maintains an ownership list of contacts as the primary salesperson and is accountable to minimum activity requirements. The primary activity consists of outbound phone calls to financial professionals, as well as serving as a SME and resource to Franklin Templeton’s US Distribution organization and Financial Advisors across the firm’s network of distribution partners by working with Franklin Templeton’s independent Specialist Investment Managers and other internal groups. This role requires an understanding of ERISA, plan design, investment menu design, various retirement platform partner features and fund availability, and requires both proactive and reactive sales and client service support of Franklin Templeton’s distribution effort including the following responsibilities.
What are the ongoing responsibilities of a Retirement Plan Consultant?
- Presentation and territory development. Assist in the development and management of territory business plans focused on top and second tier producers.
- Develop relationships with Tier 1 and Tier 2 DC advisors. Proactive monthly contact or as frequent as necessary.
- Assist with territory and firm-wide campaigns through proactive contact and relationship building with clients.
- Prospect for and develop new retirement focused producers interested in Franklin Templeton product solutions.
- Conduct proactive sales presentations to top and 2nd tier producers, recordkeeper platform partners, and third-party administrators highlighting FT Funds and Value-Adds. Discuss how these tools can be of benefit or meet their needs.
- Keep advisor information current in the CRM.
- Analyze firm sales and asset reports to determine territory opportunities.
- Event driven activities: coordinating with External Wholesalers (EW), retail Internal Wholesalers (IW) and Admin’s for upcoming events, literature, reminder calls, follow-up strategies, etc.
- Uncover 401(k) Plan opportunities with Advisors and delivering corresponding leads to our platform partners for proposal opportunities – document opportunities in CRM.
What ideal qualifications, skills & experience would help someone to be successful?
Education And Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience
- 1-3 years of equivalent sales or service experience and/or outbound call environment preferred
- Willingness to obtain CRPS, AIF and possibly other retirement designations
- FINRA Series 7 and 63 required (must be obtained within 90 days of hire)
- Knowledge of Contact Management Systems, Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, RRI, FI360, 401(k) Prospecting databases
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- Experience in an outbound call environment preferred
- Knowledge of 401(k) Retirement Plans preferred along with Mutual Fund knowledge. DCIO experience a plus
- Effective phone skills and relationship building skills along with an outgoing personality and excellent customer service
- Effective presentation skills and strong attention to detail
- Team player with an ability to multi-task
- Demonstrates flexibility and adapts to change quickly
- Ability to handle stressful environments. Must be a self-starter and have excellent follow through
- Highly organized, efficient, and goal oriented
- Ability to travel on occasion
- Ability to work out of our Boston, MA location on a hybrid basis (three days in office)
Compensation: Franklin Templeton offers employees a competitive and valuable range of total rewards—monetary and non-monetary—designed to support the whole person and to recognize their time, talents, and results. Along with base compensation, other compensation is offered such as a discretionary bonus, 401k plan, health insurance, and other perks. There are several factors taken into consideration in making compensation decisions including but not limited to location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. At Franklin Templeton, we apply a total reward philosophy where all aspects of compensation and benefits are taken into consideration in determining compensation. We expect the base salary range for this position to be $60,000 – $70,000 per year plus an opportunity to earn variable compensation, which may include discretionary bonus and commission.
