The Trading Services Business Unit Risk team is responsible for first line of defense risk management and supervision for all areas of our business. This senior leader role will help shape the strategic risk framework to ensure ongoing compliance with regulatory, supervisory, and other firm risk standards within a dynamic environment.
This is a People leadership opportunity, with a veteran team of direct reports that oversee a wide array of communications with the public in multiple formats, primarily focused on equities, options, futures, and proprietary trading technologies.
The applicant must have strong written and verbal communications skills, previous experience mentoring and developing talent, and a proven track record fostering collaborative relationships. This is a complex role that will require a candidate to possess considerable industry and supervisory knowledge, excellent problem solving and project management skills, intricate and extensive knowledge of the Trader business, and the ability to manage multiple competing tasks simultaneously.
Key Outcomes
- Develop and deploy strategies, policies, processes, controls, tools, and people to execute supervision and control for Trading Services functions, including those supporting the distribution of communications/content related to active trader topics (e.g. technical analysis, options, futures, forex, portfolio margin, API, etc.), oversight and moderation of chat rooms, complaint reporting, public appearances, test accounts, OBAs, gifts/entertainment, etc.
- Maintain a strong culture of risk management and compliance across the Trading Services organization through proactive communication, training, and implementation of industry best practices where feasible to encourage ongoing risk maturity.
- Monitor and report on the overall Trading Services risk profile, including addressing the regulatory and business landscape, open issues and opportunities of the functions overseen.
- Foster strong relationships and collaborative partnerships with internal partners and key stakeholders necessary for achieving the team’s overall objectives, including business leaders across trading services, retail supervision, marketing and the first line risk management office, second line risk counterparts in compliance, enterprise risk and legal, and third line internal audit partners, to best align strategic initiatives within our risk appetite.
- Assist with audits, exams, inquiries, and other ad-hoc priorities as requested.
- Develop and empower a diverse group of employees with the skills and expertise to identify and manage Schwab’s risk effectively.
- As needed, perform content review and approval, help with the coordination and execution of the overall review process, and provide ongoing supervision of licensed personnel.
What you have
Required Experience
- Undergraduate Degree or Equivalent Experience Required
- Series 7, 63 and 24 licensing required
- Series 3, 34, and 4 licensing required within 6 months as COE
- 8+ years risk management experience in areas including Communications with the Public (CWTP) and other risk management practice, audit, compliance, and supervision.
- Strong trading/derivatives knowledge and work experience, including an in-depth of understanding of options and Futures, and advanced knowledge of the financial services/brokerage/futures industry (including rules and regulations)
- Previous people management experience; ability to lead a high-performing team, fostering trust and collaboration for optimal results
- Strong leadership skills; ability to challenge the status quo, inspire teammates, and work strategically with business partners across the organization, such as legal, compliance, risk and audit
- Ability to make sound and practical decisions under pressure.
- Adaptability and ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline driven, environment with changing business conditions, including a strong ability to multi-task
- Willing to travel up to 10% of the time
Preferred Experience
- Currently performing in a Director role
- Advanced Degree in Finance, Business or Related field preferred.
- Strong listening, assessment, negotiating, and analytical skills with advanced attention to detail to execute complex assignments
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft I Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and other related computer software
- Advanced proficiency with governance, risk, and compliance tools
- Military education or experience may be considered in lieu of civilian requirements listed
