Manages all human resource matters regarding attorneys and staff within the Washington, DC office. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to administration of hiring, assignments, supervision, training, professional development, performance evaluation, discipline, termination, salary and bonus administration, and maintenance of human resource records.
Primary Responsibilities and/or Essential functions:
- Reviews and recommends staffing levels, manages recruitment, interviews, checks references, and hires qualified applicants. Oversees new hire orientation, assign mentors, and provides ongoing HR, employee relations, and professional development support to both attorneys and staff.
- Develops HR policies and procedures for consideration and inclusion in the firm and/or office policy and procedure manual. Ensures compliance with federal, state and local employment laws and regulations.
- Develops and ensures periodic review of standard job descriptions and position specifications for staff.
- Manages office workflow, allocates resources, and coordinates team projects to ensure adequate staffing.
- Stay abreast of compensation trends and market data and liaise with the Compensation and Performance Management team to ensure internal equity and external competitiveness.
- Oversees annual performance process for all attorney support assistants (ASA), applicable staff and managers. Prepares and conducts performance review meetings for the HR & Office Administration coordinator and all administrative support assistants (ASA) and assists in delivering other evaluations as needed.
- Counsels staff not adhering to firm standards, discusses improvement plans, and guides attorneys and managers through progressive discipline with staff members. Handles employee relations issues confidentially and acts as a liaison between employees and managers. Prepares necessary documentation and refer employees to Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) when appropriate.
- Manages professional development workshops and trainings for attorneys and staff.
- Promotes cordial interpersonal relationships and takes measures to enhance employee morale and engagement.
- Maintains and updates Workday database with the new hire information, change in status, etc.
- Analyzes and evaluates employee trends to identify ways to close the gaps, improve overall employee engagement, and promote organizational effectiveness.
- Responds to EEOC, ADA, and workers’ compensation and unemployment claims.
- Prepares the annual HR budget including, secretarial overtime, HR & Administration coordinator overtime, background checking costs, wellness and flu shot costs and any HR related events/costs.
- Participates in the DC Wellness Committee and DC Diversity Committee with office initiatives and planning and executing office engagements and events.
- Maintains professional relationships with employment agencies and temporary agencies. Interviews potential new temporary agencies and conducts cost comparison with local market.
- Travels to NY office as needed.
- Any additional responsibilities as required by management.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- 5+ years of human resource administration and employee relations experience.
- Ability to organize and prioritize numerous tasks and complete them under time constraints.
- Interpersonal skills necessary to communicate with a diverse group of attorneys, staff and clients and provide information with ordinary courtesy and tact while safeguarding confidentiality.
- Interpersonal skills necessary in order to communicate by telephone and email to provide information with ordinary courtesy and tact.
- Interpersonal skills necessary to assist in conflict resolution in the workplace.
- Work occasionally requires more than 40 hours per week to perform the essential duties of the position.
- Able to use database software, spreadsheet, and word processing software and equipment to complete analysis and reports.
Education/Certifications:
- Bachelor's degree preferred, or equivalent relevant work experience.
Estimated salary range is $145,000 - $170,000. Compensation decisions within the range are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case including but not limited to the individual's skills, experience, and qualifications.
