What You'll Do
As a Director of Portfolio Management at Principal, you will have the outstanding opportunity to lead a portfolio management team, driving business initiative execution, and optimizing the portfolio of work to enhance value and impact. In this role, you will lead the team responsible for working with senior leaders, strategy, finance, and IT, to prioritize and prioritise, ultimately helping to efficiently implement our key initiatives propelling our business growth!
Responsibilities
- Lead the portfolio management functions for Principal Asset Management, ensuring the effective execution of portfolios and programs aligned with the business unit and enterprise strategic priorities. Display leadership, organizational awareness, and collaboration with leaders and partners across the enterprise to drive outcomes.
- Collaborate with senior leadership to define portfolio objectives, success criteria, and performance metrics. Ensure appropriate risk, change, and performance management techniques are applied within the portfolio setting. Facilitate effective communication and teamwork across teams and partners.
- Analyze and continuously improve how we perform within and across portfolios. Apply insights gained to streamline decision making, dependency management, reporting, and value delivery. Collaborate across the enterprise to ensure resources are allocated to key initiatives, both in the local business unit(s) and collectively across the entire enterprise portfolio.
Provide overall leadership to the portfolio management function, ensuring the effective execution of portfolios and programs aligned with strategic priorities. Own the application of knowledge, skills, processes, tools, and techniques to meet or exceed the needs and expectations of the business. Educate and influence others on appropriate methodologies.
Who You Are
- You have a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience and 8+ years of responsibility for strategic integration, partner alignment, complex decision making, analysis, and informal leadership or equivalent demonstrated through one or a combination of the following: work experience, training, military experience, or education with at least 4 of those years listed above, having direct responsibility for management of sophisticated, cross-functional initiatives
- You have a strong intuition for business and an understanding of the capabilities of information technology and applications to find opportunities for process improvement
- You are able to operate in ambiguous environments and enjoy assessing organizational culture and operating model needs; and appropriately adapting to deliver required results

Salary Range Information
Salary ranges below reflect targeted base salaries. Non-sales positions have the opportunity to participate in a bonus program. Sales positions are eligible for sales incentives, and in some instances a bonus plan, whereby total compensation may far exceed base salary depending on individual performance. Actual compensation for all roles will be based upon geographic location, work experience, education, licensure requirements and/or skill level and will be finalized at the time of offer.
Salary Range (Non-Exempt expressed as hourly; Exempt expressed as yearly)
$137000 - $185000 / year
Time Off Program
Flexible Time Off (FTO) is provided to salaried (exempt) employees and provides the opportunity to take time away from the office with pay for vacation, personal or short-term illness. Employees don’t accrue a bank of time off under FTO and there is no set number of days provided.

This role offers hybrid (blending at least three office days in a typical workweek) in our Des Moines, Iowa corporate office.
