Portfolio Group
BCLS is building a dedicated team to help maximize value across our portfolio. In partnership with the senior BCLS investors, the Portfolio Group will lead our efforts to 1) identify, prioritize, and enable key value-creation initiatives across the portfolio, and 2) to ensure we allocate our time and resources effectively to this end by leveraging appropriate internal and external resources. BCLS seeks to enhance the value of our portfolio companies through five main vectors: Capital Formation, Capital Allocation / Strategy, Business Development, Team and Board Strengthening, and Navigating Externalities. Value will be driven through a combination of efforts from investors, members of the Portfolio Group, and external advisors or service providers.
Additionally, the Portfolio Group plays a leading role in driving investment and fund communications both internally and externally. In partnership with the BCLS senior team, the Portfolio Group develops content, such as quarterly letters, as well as engagement strategy to ensure consistent and thoughtful relationship-building with LPs.
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Associate will work closely with the Managing Director in the Portfolio Group and the BCLS senior team to support strategy / plans as they identify, develop, and execute across a range of priorities. He/she will play a critical role supporting our efforts to drive value creation in our portfolio companies in order to successfully achieve the investment theses we have underwritten.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
Support BCLS efforts to advise Portfolio Companies on Capital Formation:
Work directly with the Managing Director in the Portfolio Group and the BCLS senior team to provide the necessary support to assess capital needs and a strategy / plan of select Portfolio Companies to acquire capital; optimize their story / messaging / materials, enhance investor targeting, and provide guidance on investment bankers and research analysts.
Assist in developing scalable resources to help portfolio companies optimize accessing capital – including profiling public and private funds, analyzing investment banks involved in capital raises, and assessing sell-side analysts.
Further Develop and Enhance Value-Added Resources for Our Portfolio Companies
Create and maintain insightful and actionable compendium of counterparties (consultants, vendors, and other resources) to help portfolio companies select cost-effective outsourced services that can enable a successful operating structure and consistent achievement of critical milestones.
Support comprehensive evaluative analysis of search firms to help portfolio companies select ideal search partner for critical executive and board roles.
Assist in benchmarking analyses that can inform critical executive decisions – for example a compensation survey across portfolio companies.
Enhance Team and Board Development
Enter and maintain relevant details in CRM for industry contacts that BCLS engages with through Team and Board development efforts.
Create and manage relevant contact lists to support BCLS engagement with portfolio executives and industry contacts to ensure lists are up to date and can be leveraged by investment team and portfolio group.
Assist in Portfolio Review Process and Internal Resource Allocation
Collaborate with Managing Director of Portfolio Group and BCLS senior team to develop and implement enhancements to Portfolio Review process to drive progress across our five main vectors: Capital Formation, Capital Allocation / Strategy, Business Development, Team Strengthening, and Navigating Externalities.
Support deal teams efforts to implement and track BCLS action plans for priority portfolio companies.
Contribute to Enhancement of Quarterly and Year-End Communications
GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS
Strong academic credentials
2-5 years experience across (ideally with a combination of) operating and consulting or investing banking roles – ideally involving biopharma and/or medtech companies, but not mandatory
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact with and advise executives at BCLS portfolio companies
Extraordinary verbal and written communication skills
Strong analytical skills and comfort organizing and interpreting complicated data
Proven ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines
Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team and a willingness to take on any task, no matter how small
Detail-oriented, conscientious, and energetic self-starter with ability to think creatively
Outstanding Excel, Word, and PowerPoint skills
