Description
This is a rare opportunity to work directly with a leading merger arbitrage portfolio manager who has built one of the most data-driven, detail-oriented processes in the event-driven space. The strategy blends fundamental event analysis, equity and credit research, probabilistic modeling, and proprietary data analysis to invest across asset classes and geographies. The result is a differentiated, highly repeatable process that has generated award-winning returns and Sharpe ratios that are consistently among the highest in the merger arbitrage space.
You will sit side-by-side with the PM and be involved in every dimension of the investment lifecycle, including research, modeling, regulatory analysis, trading, portfolio construction, and risk management. In this role, you will have significant visibility, direct mentorship, and the ability to make a meaningful impact.
This is a full-time position based in Chicago, IL, working directly with the head of our event-driven desk.
Responsibilities
This is not a "coverage role." You will be a core extension of the investment process. Prior experience with the strategies is not required.
- Conduct fundamental and quantitative research on mergers and corporate actions across multiple industries and geographies
- Participate in all aspects of the investment process, including idea generation, diligence, trading, and risk management
- Monitor daily developments across 100+ active deals and debate material events with the PM
- Track and analyze regulatory processes; interpret filings with speed and precision
- Identify mispriced spreads, key catalysts, unusual conditions, and hidden risks or optionality
- Engage with senior corporate management teams, sell-side analysts, and brokers
- Maintain and enrich the firm's proprietary merger database
- Contribute to the development pipeline, including research into new strategies, factors, and signals
Requirements
- 4-year bachelor's degree required
- 2+ years of investment banking or equivalent analytical experience preferred
- Unwavering commitment to ethics and integrity with a reputation for sound judgment
- Clear passion for investing and desire to understand how businesses and deals work
- Outstanding modeling and Excel skills with exceptional attention to detail
- Strong research skills, with the ability to quickly gather, evaluate, and synthesize complex data
- Deep understanding of finance and business models across a wide range of industries
- Ability to quickly learn new concepts and operate in a fast-paced, collaborative environment
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to draw inferences and challenge assumptions
- Exceptional work ethic and willingness to do what it takes to maintain high standards
- Programming and/or foreign language skills are a plus, but not required
