The CalSTRS Investments Branch is seeking an experienced individual to work as a Portfolio Manager (PM) on the Sustainable Investment & Stewardship Strategies (SISS) team.
The SISS unit was established in 1978 to protect assets through good governance and operational accountability. Today the unit focuses on three primary strategies: managing a portfolio of sustainability-themed private market investments that are additive to the Total Fund; leading CalSTRS stewardship activities to create value through corporate engagement and proxy voting; and supporting strategic relationships with CalSTRS members and partners. The SISS unit also leads multiple efforts across the Investments Branch, including CalSTRS net zero portfolio emissions strategy, which includes managing climate-related risks, investing in climate solutions with attractive risk-return characteristics, and using CalSTRS influence to accelerate the transition to a more stable, net zero global economy.
Under the direction of the Director of SISS, the PM provides a high-level of expertise in managing the implementation of CalSTRS sustainable investment strategies for private assets and the integration of material sustainability considerations within a dedicated SISS Portfolio and across CalSTRS' asset classes. The incumbent will oversee due diligence efforts and implement comprehensive strategies supporting sustainable investing in private climate solutions for the SISS Portfolio and through collaborations with Investment Branch colleagues in other private asset classes. The PM leads, mentors, and manages staff to ensure effective execution of the portfolio strategies and operational excellence. This position requires the incumbent to exercise the highest degree of independence, confidentiality and discretionary judgment.
The ideal candidate will possess the following skills:
- Experience with sustainable investments and private assets investments
- Experience identifying key investment merits and risks
- Experience preparing memoranda and presentations
- Experience working in an investment environment
- Experience leading, coaching or managing staff
- CFA certification preferred
- Strong interpersonal and mentoring skills
- Knowledge of management techniques related to institutional investment portfolios, including design and construction of an investment portfolio, risk management, due diligence, negotiation and closure, monitoring, reporting restructuring, and exiting
- Ability to promote teamwork and cross-functional collaboration and communication in support of CalSTRS' strategic goals
- Ability to implement CalSTRS sustainable investment strategies
- Ability to analyze a broad range of information and synthesize it into concise and coherent conclusions and recommendations
- Ability to manage competing priorities and effectively prioritize workload to ensure all deadlines are met and re-direct job focus when needed
