Lazard Asset Management is recruiting an Investment Stewardship Analyst to join its global Investment Stewardship & Sustainable Investments team, located across New York and London. This role is dedicated to active ownership, with primary responsibilities in direct company engagement, proxy voting, governance research, and the assessment of stewardship risks across global portfolios.
Acting as a specialist within the firm’s stewardship function, you will lead dialogues with portfolio companies, evaluate governance practices, research proxy votes, and support the escalation of material concerns through Lazard’s Active Ownership framework. The role also includes thematic research focused on fundamental research driven stewardship priorities such as executive compensation, supply‑chain risk oversight, board effectiveness, climate governance, or human capital management.
Active Engagement & Ownership
- Lead direct, one-on-one meetings with portfolio company management to inform investment decisions, our view on long-term returns, and to drive outcomes related to governance, capital allocation, board composition, risk oversight, and others topics.
- Identify and escalate concerns to the Active Ownership Committee when company practices diverge from long‑term shareholder value or Lazard’s stewardship principles.
- Track progress on engagement objectives and prepare periodic reporting for internal and client audiences.
Proxy Voting
- Analyze proxy statements, shareholder proposals, and director elections using research from external providers and Lazard’s internal governance principles.
- Direct votes across global markets while navigating jurisdictional constraints (e.g., share blocking) to protect client interests.
- Support enhancements to voting guidelines and ensure accurate documentation of voting rationales.
Integrated Research
- Perform "deep-dives" on sector-specific risks using the Materiality Mapping framework to quantify non-financial risks like carbon pricing or labor mobility.
- Maintain high‑quality stewardship analysis in the proprietary Lazard Asset Management Research (LAMR) database for global access and use by investment teams.
- Lead one thematic research project annually on a priority stewardship topic, synthesizing global trends, regulatory developments, and company-level practices.
Portfolio Risk & Compliance
- Collaborate with the Global Risk Management Team to review "Watchlists", assess stewardship-related portfolio risks, and monitor style tilts related to carbon footprints and other non-financial metrics.
- Support regulatory reporting requirements for global frameworks such as SFDR (Article 8/9) and the UK Stewardship Code.
You’ll need to have
- 5 or more years of experience in sustainable investing & analysis: stewardship, corporate governance, proxy voting
- 3 or more years of experience with Emerging Markets thematic research
- Ability to evaluate governance structures, proxy proposals, and company disclosures across global markets
- Strong understanding of financial drivers of companies
- Clear, persuasive and engaging writing skills to produce summaries, voting rationales, and governance insights
- Pride in ownership and deep commitment to continuous improvement through global cross functional collaboration
- Proven ability to influence decision‑making and build trusted relationships with investment teams, company management, and directors
- Strong understanding of corporate governance frameworks, stewardship practices, and ESG data platforms (e.g., ISS, Glass Lewis, MSCI, Sustainalytics, Bloomberg)
- A methodical approach to work, with strong attention to detail and the ability to organize and prioritize heavy workloads
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree, CFA, or governance-related credential preferred
