John Hancock seeks a seeks an attorney to join its Advanced Markets team as Associate Counsel. This dynamic role partners with sales personnel and distributors to deliver sophisticated planning strategies for clients. You will join a team of attorneys and consultants who are instrumental in expanding sales and marketing opportunities while ensuring responsible growth and alignment with enterprise risk.
The Associate Counsel role provides guidance and support to product sales in advanced planning concepts across a multi-channel distribution network. With knowledge and practical experience in the areas of wealth transfer planning, business succession planning, charitable planning and related tax issues. This position also partners closely with advanced markets consultants, product, marketing, compliance, sales leadership, and operations to enable growth, manage regulatory risk, and advance strategic initiatives.
Position Responsibilities:
Case Consultation: Assist in providing written and verbal support of case inquiries and sales activities across internal and external sales and distribution partners. Includes promotion and education of life insurance strategies to facilitate wealth transfer planning, business planning, charitable planning and the related tax issues.
Advanced Markets Promotional and Educational Materials: Assist in researching support for the drafting of new tax/planning strategies and materials (or changes to existing strategies and materials). Includes legal research of all aspects of new strategies and review of materials developed by attorneys and non-attorneys for technical and legal compliance
Presentation of Key Sales and Planning Concepts to Distributors: Present and provide education on key sales concepts and regulatory/legislative changes impacting our industry to our distributors and sales personnel. May require some travel to present at conferences, study-groups, small producer groups and one-on-one meetings and presentation through telephone and web-based conferences.
Subject Matter Expertise: Participation as Advanced Markets subject matter expert on projects and initiatives crossing multiple business areas (e.g., product development, underwriting initiatives, new markets, etc.)
Other responsibilities:
Assist in tracking and monitoring of emerging and existing sales concepts
Lead research projects/initiatives
Provide assistance with respect to complex legal, regulatory and compliance matters
Monitor legislative, regulatory and industry developments, and provide updates to multiple business areas
Participate in industry conferences, presentations, committees and working groups
Professional networking – demonstrate an orientation towards developing and maintaining networks and relationships with internal and external partners to facilitate the sale of Life Insurance.
Required Qualifications:
Juris Doctor (required) with 2-4 years minimum Professional Experience in: Life Insurance or Estate, Income, Tax, or Business Planning
LLM, CPA, CFP designations are an asset
Experience with annuities is an asset
Strong analytical abilities, excellent judgment and outstanding communication skills
Strong writing, editorial, project management, organization and customer service skills
Experience using Microsoft Office products
Highly developed negotiation, influencing and networking skills
Knowledge of life insurance strategies, products, concepts and pricing standards
Strong presentation skills, comfort with presenting at various size audiences and methods (in-person seminars/townhalls, webinars etc.)
Exposure to general principles of taxation and accounting
Must be well organized and detailed in approach, with good follow-through
Ability to work multiple projects with changing deadlines
Ability to effectively balance competing priorities in fast-paced environment
Resourcefulness to shifting demands in an evolving environment
Ability to travel to industry and distributor conferences, meetings, etc.

Salary range is expected to be between
$128,550.00 USD - $222,820.00 USD
