The Conflicts Attorney supports the Firm’s offices globally and is primarily responsible for reviewing and clearing lateral hire conflicts, reviewing and clearing business intake conflicts, identifying potential conflicts, and managing their resolution. This role works directly with attorneys and Firm leadership on a daily basis.
Primary Responsibilities and/or Essential functions:
- Review and analyze conflict reports related to lateral and new hire process; provide guidance to Firm partners as well as advising new and lateral hires on conflict issues, including screens, consents, waivers, and notice letters.
- Establish and maintain ethical walls and other legal screens.
- Provide guidance and oversight to non-lawyer analysts supporting the new and lateral hire process, including best practices for corporate family research, and preparation of conflict check reports.
- Review conflict reports associated with the global business intake process. Identify potential conflicts of interest issues, provide guided analysis to partners, collaborate with members of the firm to resolve conflict issues, and assist the Firm’s EU offices with conflicts clearance involving U.S. client matters.
- Respond to queries from attorneys and professional staff across the Firm, concerning lateral, new hire, and business intake policies and procedures, conflicts of interest, and other firm policies.
- Work on ad hoc projects as they arise.
- Be available for urgent matters, which may occasionally require evening and/or weekend availability.
- Any additional responsibilities as required by management.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- 2+ years of experience in a highly regarded commercial law firm dealing with conflicts, emphasis on lateral hire conflicts a plus.
- Experience analyzing and advising on U.S. conflicts rules, emphasis on lateral conflict rules a plus.
- Knowledge of iManage conflict checking system a plus.
- Excellent communication and strong interpersonal skills, both verbal and written. Must be able to draft complex information succinctly, thoroughly and in plain English, as well as communicate such analysis verbally.
- Ability to work efficiently, give clear and commercial advice and understand the significance of matters in the wider context of the firm’s business.
- Strong analytical and organizational skills, with a focus on attention to detail and the highest standards of accuracy and efficiency.
- Ability to manage a workload comprised of day-to-day queries as well as longer-term projects.
- Ability to effectively liaise with all levels of both legal and professional staff to assist with the resolution of issues and be able to inspire confidence from senior people.
- Should be resourceful, possess initiative and be able to work autonomously with a high personal motivation, while also being an effective member of a global team.
- Must be able to prioritize, multi-task, show confidence and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
Education/Certifications:
- J.D. from an accredited law school and admission to practice in New York in good standing.
Estimated salary range is $175,000 - $195,000. Compensation decisions within the range are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case including but not limited to the individual's skills, experience, and qualifications.
