The opportunity: The Director of Cost Containment, Product Development will drive the business unit’s product, solution, and partnership strategy with the goal of effectively maintaining and enhancing the company’s position in the marketplace as a premier an emerging leader in Health and cost containment solutions. In partnership with our AVP of clinical ops, designated external partners and functional leaders within the business, this role will spearhead the process of identifying and implementing new and enhanced product and service solutions that will:
- Enhance the value sun life can bring to our clients through expanding the breadth of our traditional cost containment offerings through clinical 360.
- Work cross functionally to assess the value of partnering with vendors proactively and conduct small scale implementations to prove out business case.
- Co Author multiyear plan with Clinical and product partners to achieve our strategic cost containment and Health objectives
- Partner with AVP of Health on business development and other opportunities
- Develop high cost claimant framework to focus efforts for Health and cost containment activities.
- Improve business case development process and tracking of key metrics for Health and cost containment initiatives.
- Strengthen our existing products and expand our reach into new segments and untapped distribution channels
How you will contribute:
Through effective collaboration with our PinnacleCare, Clinical, operations, Risk Solution – Stop-Loss, and Group Business units, and through the utilization of Agile, Design Thinking, and Project Management methodologies, this individual will partner with functional leaders to map out short term and long term pathways, translate concepts into actionable projects, and execute on the build and management of a suite of development initiatives and programs aligned with our Health strategy.
The solutions we will deliver will allow Sun Life to create new value on the frontiers of the member and employer health and group insurance and service space, expand our footprint, and create competitive advantage for our Health and Risk Solutions business.
Ideal candidates will bring a unique suite of experiences and skills, meeting and exceeding the core qualifications required of the role, and also demonstrate the ability to sub- specialize in one of the following disciplines within the Client Focused Solution team:
Development, activation, and early phase support of new health solutions:
- Develop a multi- year new product and service solution vision aligned with overarching Health strategic plan
- Spearhead product and solution development initiatives– drive co-creation and design work, concept and business model development, navigate approval process, and partner with functional areas to stand up operational support
- Provide oversight and management for early-stage new products, benefits, and services
- Manage and support relationships with vendors and program / solution partners
Enhancement and support of existing Product, Benefit, and Services:
- Oversee the continuous evaluation, and maintenance of existing product, service, and program offerings.
- Enhance, refine, and introduce new benefit and service solutions attached to our core products.
- Follow and capitalize on industry trends and assess competitor’s product offerings and capabilities to ensure existing products remain marketable and competitive in the market
- Modify product when necessary to remain compliant with state and federal law
General responsibilities:
- Assesses market and client research – analyzes data collected through voice of client research, design thinking sessions, and stakeholder / partner / client relationship activities
- Develops strategy and action plan to drive development and growth in new and enhanced products, services, and programs
- Represent Sun Life Stop-Loss in the external market, including but not limited to, meetings with key producer partners, attendance at large scale industry events, Sun Life sponsored distribution / thought leadership / PR activities, and social media
- Lead exploration and prioritization sessions within external vendors and business partners within our PinnacleCare, Sun Life Stop-Loss, FullScopeRMS, US Group Product, and US Shared Services
- Build business case and financial models to be used in assessment, prioritization, and steering discussions with functional leaders / primary business stakeholders
- Translate concepts into actionable project and road map. Secure business resources, partner with Functional Leaders and Program Managers, develop action plan, and build systems and frameworks to track execution
- Coach and develop talent - direct and dotted line management of Product management and allocated resources
What you will bring with you:
- Ability to work with a diverse range of people
- 7+ Years in management level position within Product Development or Product Management
- 7+ Years of experience working in Health services, Health Insurance, Self-funded employer services, protection products, or related experience within healthcare industry
- Knowledge of key business drivers and Client facing capabilities within Health focused benefits, Employee Benefits, Stop-Loss and Self-funding space
- Critical thinking skills
- Demonstrated competency in leading teams through strategy and design thinking sessions
- Ability to analyze distill client research and data. Proficient in data analysis, segmentation, and business model creation
- Competent in building business cases and positioning presentations
- Demonstrated evidence of delivery of concept from ideation stage through execution and on-going management
- Skilled in managing small, mid, and large scale multi-functional projects. Proficient in Product and Project Management Processes
- Experienced in working with external vendors and partners. Ability to both assess and vet capabilities, and to form and effectively manage relationships
- Capable of building strong relationships and maneuvering projects through matrixed organizations
- Expertise in leading through influence / can manage without authority
- Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills
- Ability to think creatively to resolve, routine, complex and/or non-routine issues

- Southern California region: $162,500-$243,800 annually
- Central California region: $162,500-$243,800 annually
- Northern California region: $173,700-$260,600 annually
If you are a Colorado or Nevada resident, the salary range for this position is $147,100-$220,700 annually
If you are a Connecticut or Maryland resident, the salary range for this position is $154,100-$231,200 annually
If you are Washington or Rhode Island resident, the salary range for this position is $162,500-$243,800 annually
If you are a New York resident, the salary range for this position is $173,700-$260,600 annually
