About The Role
Responsible for developing, and clearly articulating the vision and growth strategy for the New York Tri-State Advisory & Transactions (A&T) Retail business, in partnership with the Tri-State President and the Retail Line of Business (LOB) leader. The leader will build on the existing talent of our Retail professionals across the region, grow a team of professionals, coordinate appropriate resources, sustain a strong reputation and brand, and ultimately grow the revenue of and drive our Retail A&T business market across numerous Retail sub-specialties. Importantly, this leader will also build and foster a sense of community and connectivity among CBRE Retail producers in the Tri-State region.
What You'll Do
Strategy & Growth
- Develop and implement annual strategic plans that align with Americas Retail and overall Tri-State strategies and in response to anticipated economic and market trends and business targets.
- Foster a strong culture of community, connectivity and collaboration with Retail professionals. Understand the core of each producer’s business, growth plan, and team support needs.
- Work with Geographic Market leadership and LOB to increase the level of producer recruitment, with particular focus on top and high growth-potential talent; specifically target, recruit, and retain key Retail talent, including developing and implementing succession plans for key positions.
- Intentionally review, and where appropriate, manage under-performing talent.
- Support producers on a variety of block and tackle internal efforts including but not limited to interstate brokerage agreements, often in coordination with the company’s legal team and leadership outside the market.
- Fully understand client needs and ensure that company resources and professionals are developed and suitable to deliver superior client outcomes.
- Develop Retail platform through the training of early and rising talent and calibrating appropriate resourcing from marketing, research, legal and other support functions.
- Increase attachment to the Retail business through regional capital markets teams, office leasing teams and others.
- Manage a Retail business that is a market leader across Tri-State, sustainably grow market share in all core and specialty retail sectors and maintain a lead in services where CBRE is the acknowledged market leader. Of specific importance is cultivating and engaging Retail talent across local tenant representation; local landlord representation (institutional and non-institutional) and national, multi-market tenant representation across verticals such as High Street, Suburban, etc. Partner on this growth, where appropriate, with LOB leader, Retail Investor Leasing Leader, Occupier Solutions Leader(s).
Market Facing Activities
- Continually enhance, build out, improve and differentiate the Tri-State Retail value proposition, including:
- Overall Tri-State Retail brand and communications strategy
- Coordination of local research and thought leadership
- Integration with complementary Advisory Services
- Lead or support Strategic Recruiting efforts in close coordination with LOB
- Constantly monitor and solution for market trends, opportunities and competitive threats
- Identify and communicate market trends, opportunities and competitive threats.
- Partner with our other Tri-State teams to share best practices, pursuit alignment and further our initiatives.
Business Development
- Ensure consistent maintenance of pipeline and CBRE pursuits for all Tri-State Retail professionals.
- Be materially involved in meaningful pursuits and client development in coordination with Retail professionals, Geographic Market leaders (and Retail or other lines of business leaders as relevant), including:
- Creating and proactively pursuing a target list of prospective clients.
- Working with Tri-State Retail professionals, business development and solutioning teams to identify and qualify pursuit strategies and prospects, engage sales management team formation, and support key client development activities.
- Supporting the creation of integrated proposals, presentations, and other client-facing materials with the pursuit team and national / local marketing professionals.
- Guiding, and/or participating in client meetings, presentations, preparation sessions, solutioning and pricing.
- Completing post-mortems to identify critical success factors in pursuits and using data to consistently strengthen and improve pursuit strategies.

What You'll Need
- Must possess proven leadership and relationship building experience with a focus on Retail services. Must have a strong understanding of the commercial real estate industry and its retail sector. Must possess a strong sense of urgency and solid time management skills. An affinity for creativity and marketing will contribute to the success of the individual in this role. Excellent writing and presentation skills are required. Must have exceptional conceptual skills for an understanding of the larger function of the role. Marketing and finance skills will also contribute to the success of the individual in this role.
- Bachelor’s Degree (BA or BS) from four-year college or university required. Master’s degree (MA, MS or MBA) preferred. Ten (10) years or more progressively responsible experience is strongly preferred. Possesses strong experience in managing a large, diverse team. Demonstrates knowledge/capabilities in the areas of financial analysis, business administration, legal, human resources, ethical practices, marketing, business development and consultative sales. Fosters a strong service-orientation and an “advisory role” in client relationships. Uses ability to think strategically and to synthesize the most complex business and financial data. Utilizes an entrepreneurial approach and develops innovative solutions.
- Must possess, or obtain shortly after hire, a real estate license in all applicable jurisdictions in the Tri-State region. Participation in professional, industry, and civic organizations, including the International Council of Shopping Centers, is preferred.
- Ability to communicate effectively to justify or defend sensitive matters with executives.
- Possess advanced financial skills and knowledge to review the complex financial reports prepared by others and to make recommendations to executives that impact division/line of business/company
- Ability to review and analyze recommendations and results provided by others that directly impact division/line of business/company.
- A strong entrepreneurial and creative spirit. Some knowledge and understanding of all facets of property and asset management, leasing, brokerage, marketing, and financial reporting. Is flexible and adept at handling multiple priorities and initiatives. Displays excellent organizational skills. Above-average computer skills in Word, Excel, and Internet usage. High level of integrity and ethics is critical.

CBRE carefully considers multiple factors to determine compensation, including a candidate’s education, training, and experience. The minimum salary for the Managing, Director (retail) position is $200,000 per year and the maximum salary for the Managing, Director (retail) position is $275,000 per year. The compensation that is offered to a successful candidate will depend on the candidate’s skills, qualifications, and experience.
