What You'll Do
The Principal Financial Group is seeking a Director, Operational Risk Management! The purpose of this role is to work with the Global Head of Risk for Principal Asset Management to develop, lead, and implement Principal Asset Management’s operational risk framework which demonstrates the enterprise risk management program. This role will provide deep technical expertise of the private and public investment and funds management business operations. Based on this knowledge and risk management experience, this role will be a critical partner, helping the business understand its operational risks and make astute risk-based decisions while providing effective challenge and customer concern.
In addition, this role will lead the funds operations oversight activities for the US fund platforms and provide mentorship on asset management standard processes to our international offices.
- Risk Consulting - Partner with senior business and functional leaders to help make risk informed decisions through the deep understanding of the business and its operations. Provide informative analysis and interpretation of risks based on a detailed technical understanding of operational risk management, robust and relevant knowledge of the business operations, and understanding of industry trends, current best practices, and regulations. Provide direct and measurable benefit to the business in managing and mitigate risk effectively.
- Funds Operational Risk Oversight - Lead operational risk oversight activities for our US Fund platforms that meet regulatory and Board expectations, including sub advisor due diligent, Board Risk reporting and Fund operations risk assessments and engagements.
- Risk Framework and Governance: Take a leadership role in the business unit operational risk framework (in alignment with the enterprise program) that ensures operational risks are effectively identified, assessed, managed, and mitigated. Review and challenge the design and efficiency of controls to manage operational risks within appetite and seek appropriate assurance to support the outcomes. Work closely with other operational risk disciplines to provide holistic review of the business operational risk profile, risk interdependences and correlations. Use outstanding influencing and negotiating skills to identify, assess and control emerging risks prior to material impact. Be an effective representative and communicator of operational risk to various business Committees and Boards. Lead internal operational risk focused working groups and Committees.
Who You Are
- Bachelor's degree, plus 10+ years' work experience in the investment management and funds operations required
- Success in this position requires a deep technical understanding of global investment and fund management business and risk management tools and techniques, the ability to see the big picture, a strong business focus, client orientation, and the ability to work in a fast, paced environment.
- Industry experience and knowledge of sophisticated concepts in risk analysis including prior experience with risk tools (risk assessments, key risk indicators, loss/event database or incident tracking, unexpected loss modeling) is desirable
- Experience in translating risk assessment and analysis into recommendations and action
- Proven leadership and ability to drive change
- Strong interpersonal skills required
- Strong ability to build teamwork and convey mission, objectives, expectations and philosophy particularly in matrix environment
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships at all levels of the organization and to convey sophisticated information both orally and in writing
- International travel may be required and/or will need to be available to conduct calls outside of normal business hours
Salary Range Information
Salary ranges below reflect targeted base salaries. Non-sales positions have the opportunity to participate in a bonus program. Sales positions are eligible for sales incentives, and in some instances a bonus plan, whereby total compensation may far exceed base salary depending on individual performance. Actual compensation for all roles will be based upon geographic location, work experience, education, licensure requirements and/or skill level and will be finalized at the time of offer.
Salary Range (Non-Exempt expressed as hourly; Exempt expressed as yearly)
$137000 - $185000 / year
Time Off Program
Flexible Time Off (FTO) is provided to salaried (exempt) employees and provides the opportunity to take time away from the office with pay for vacation, personal or short-term illness. Employees don’t accrue a bank of time off under FTO and there is no set number of days provided.

Work Environments
This role offers in-office, hybrid (blending at least three office days in a typical workweek), and remote work arrangements (only if residing more than 30 miles from Des Moines, IA, or Charlotte, NC). You’ll work with your leader to figure out which option may align best based on several factors.
