Summary
The Technical Editor edits publications, documents, and web content prepared by Board staff and consultants, develops plans for the publications production and distribution, and maintains online, digital content (i.e., online manuals and web pages). Applying a general knowledge of the subject areas relevant to the Board, the Technical Editor ensures that publications and content are logically arranged and that the text conforms to current English-usage standards and established Board editorial style. The Technical Editor assists senior editors in the section in carrying out their assignments and also may be responsible for coordinating the Board’s contributions to publications of other governmental organizations.
Duties And Responsibilities
- Copy edits and proofreads publications, speeches, testimony, and other public or internal documents and web content to ensure smoothness of language and conformity to established Board style.
- Collaborates with authors of a variety of publications in presenting text and graphic material unambiguously by making substantive, organizational, stylistic, and grammatical changes and by rewriting or making specific recommendations concerning rewrites.
- In consultation with the Manager, Editing and other senior editors, devises approach to presentation of text, tables, charts, and infographics to best convey the information to the reader.
- Devises production plans for publications, coordinating the flow of content through all involved units from inception of a project through publication and distribution, including providing guidance to authoring contacts on the publications process and Board branding, design, and usability standards as well as collaborating with other BDM staff on project planning, editing, layout, and distribution online and/or in print.
- Participates in or may lead internal communications projects for division, Boardwide, or System audiences, which may include planning; scheduling; drafting or rewriting content; adjusting or making recommendations, in consultation with Manager, Editing, that align content with established branding, design, or messaging practices for internal communications; and collaborating with other internal contacts to execute projects.
- Participate in content management system workflows in all stages of production up to and including distribution (i.e., posting and printing).
- Participates with other members of the section in establishing editorial policy and style.
Position Requirements
FR-24: Requires sound editing and writing skills, experience in editing and proofreading, experience in using electronic editorial production methods and in managing the editorial production process, and ability to work well with authors, peers outside the Editing section, and managers. Also requires ability to understand information in fields unrelated to editing and publishing disciplines, sufficient to resolve inconsistencies and inaccuracies in Board publications and other written documents. Knowledge level is typically achieved through completion of bachelor’s degree—preferably in English or journalism or acquired through extensive work-related experience. Three years of specialized experience in technical editing with increasing levels of responsibility also are required.
FR-25: Requires sound editing and writing skills, experience in editing and proofreading; experience in using electronic editorial production methods and in managing the editorial production process; and ability to work well with authors, peers outside the Editing section, and managers. Also requires ability to understand information in fields unrelated to editing and publishing disciplines, such as supervision and regulation of financial institutions, sufficient to resolve inconsistencies and inaccuracies, accurately categorize documents, and create appropriate cross-references to related documents. Knowledge level is typically achieved through completion of bachelor’s degree, preferably in English, journalism, or the social sciences or acquired through extensive work-related experience. Four years of specialized experience in technical editing with increasing levels of responsibility also are required.
